I am Anthony S. Beard, RD, LD, CTM. After years of running for charities, I decided to merge my professional and recreational pursuits and in 2005, conducted my own health “mission”, raising funds forthe American Stroke Association. In 2006, I went on an ambitious, over 350 mile bike ride, along Mississippi’s historic Natchez Trace Parkway.
Why am I doing this? From the 1940's, when Metropolitan Life Insurance Company set standards forhealth, there has been a disparity between the dominant culture and African-Americans. It is a disparity that continues today. Americans of African descent suffer higher rates of most chronic diseases, especially those that have a dietary connection. African-Americans die sooner and suffer longer as a result of thoseconditions. Additionally, African American health literacy would be considered low overall.
This disparity does not have to exist. Therefore, I am going to take the initiative, to show the leadershipdesperately need in our society. I formed my own foundation to act as a channel to conduct the yearly Health Missions.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The 2010 Health Mission will continue riding along the Underground Railroad Path, from near Cinncinati , OH, to Erie, PA! More to come!
