Discouraged by the cookie cutter, one size fits all approach to nutrition services in hospitals, and complacency in community nutrition programs, Anthony got bold: He founded THE WELLNESS MEDICINE, Nutrition and fitness as your prescription for health and wellness, in 1997, and the non-profit division, The Heritage and Health Foundation, in 2006. Since that date, he has been a conduit for many, positively influencing their move towards health and wellness. Anthony specializes in what he calls, "Culturally Competent Culinary Conversation, speaking most specifically to African-Americans. He has created a blog by that name. His brand is "Diet is a hairy subject; Let's talk!
He uses a high tech, yet relationship-based approach to better serve his clients, from metabolism testing, to full color explanatory reports, to a simple palm pilot to stay connected to those who want to have a "Conversation".
This Competent Toastmaster® and Certified Personal Trainer has spoken to many audiences on a vast array of nutrition and fitness related subjects, including minority health awareness, barriers to quality nutrition in the African-American community and eating to live for African Americans. He is taking another bold stance: the elimination of the health disparity in the African American community by targeting the communication of self-care through nutrition and fitness.
A marathon road racer, cyclist, and fitness buff, Anthony sets the example by participating in local and national events, as well as organizing his own, including, " Being Rode Down the River", bike ride along the historic Natchez Trace in May 2006. An author of several articles in print and on the Internet in many areas of nutrition, fitness, and wellness, he will soon put some of these thoughts into print with the 2009 publication of "Finding Comfort in the African-American Dietary Tradition".
He has served on the board of several organizations, including national and local affiliates of the American Dietetic Association, and the National Organization of Blacks in Dietetics and Nutrition, and as a member of many, including Big Brothers, Big Sisters, League of American Cyclist, Southern Foodways Alliance, and the Longone Center for Culinary Research.
